Google generate the descriptions or snippets that listed in the search results is from the page content as well as references to that page from other directories like ODP (Open Directory Project). If you believe that the description of your website provided in the ODP is not accurate or you don't want to display that description in Google's search result pages, Use the following tags in the head section of your website:
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOODP">
<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="NOODP">
All search engines may not support the above tag, following is for MSN who implemented this tag first:
<META NAME="MSNBOT" CONTENT="NOODP">
If you want to omit both description and title from ODP, use the following:
<meta="robots" content="noodp, noarchive">
The above tags will change to your snippets once the spiders crawled and refresh their index.

Search Engine Optimization techniques and methods are employs which fall outside of the guidelines issued by the Major Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. Implementation of this type of Search Engine Optimization may provide short term gains for your site(s).

Search engines like google will not ban your website for using some of these techniques, but you can expect severe penalty by reducing your rank in the search results. That means black hat SEO practices will provide short-term benefits in terms of rankings till they discover your website for utilizing those Spam techniques.
If you feel that your site contains any of the following techniques, consider evaluating your website by removing those Spam techniques.
1) Hidden text: It is the text that visitors cannot be seen while visiting your website. This is by putting keywords in white text on white background or in other way by using CSS
2) Doorway pages: Pages with keywords filled but the user will never get this page. This is for basically attracting search engine spiders.
3) Comments tag: This tag allows you to hide contents.

Good rank in MSN means more ways for people finding your page. It is time to polish on the latest techniques in MSN optimization. The improved MSN search technology offers some interesting challenges in SEO. Here I provide some tips to get you started:
1) Use of Meta tags: Make sure that each page has unique title tags related to the page content. MSN not consider meta keywords but use meta description to describe your page theme.
2) Good Content: MSN search requires good relevant content, their algorithm scores content very highly and prefers hevier levels of keyword density as compared to google and yahoo. Beware of using keyword stuffing in the tags like Alt attributes, heading tags, comment tags or any other hidden tags.
3) Incoming Links: Get links from external sites. Also note that the quantity of links from within a site is well rewarded by MSN algorithm. Also make sure that you have used your main keyword phrases in the anchor text.
4) Internal navigation: Internal site links are crucial to MSN. try to provide important links with keyword rich anchor text in all pages. Also provide keyword rich sitemap file that linked from your homepage.
5) Spider friendly: Double check your html pages and make sure all tags are closed. MSN guidelines pointed out that proper coding is factor in their algorithm. Try to validate your pages using any online tools.
6) Static URLs: MSN indexes both static and dynamic urls, however, keyword rich static pages are preferably considered to be rank well.

DMOZ submission tips

ODP (Open directory project) is the largest human compiled directory and if you can get listed in the DMOZ directory, your ranking will improve in google as well as other search engines/directories like AllTheWeb, Excite, Teoma, WhatUSeek etc.
DMOZ submission is free but it's not easier unless you are not carefully follow their guidelines.

Category selection, Title and Description are the most important inputs to this directory. some tips below:
Category selection
Go to directory home and select suitable category and dig to the appropriate sub category. Check the existing listings and make sure your site fits to that category. Submission to wrong category may delaying/cancellation of your request.
Title
1) Do not use All caps
2) Use the first letter of each word in capital
3) Never use your URL as the title
4) Never use special characters including punctuation
5) Limit your title below 70 characters

Description
1) It should be descriptive and concise
2) Do not stuff your keywords
3) Do not use sentence like 'we are the best...'
